Are You Starting Over Have You Ever Started Over Vincent Wright, a good friend, is teaming up with my publisher to write a book called The 42 Rules of Starting Over. This book will have 42 chapters written by people who have started over, and Im sure it will serve as an inspiration to many people people who are starting over from divorce, addictions, catastrophe, loss of a loved one, etc. Even job loss. Vincent has a number of authors right now (I submitted my story), but if you have any inclination to share your story or how you started over, please contact him. Here are some details about what they want: All rules must be between 550-650 words All rules must have an example, story or anecdote to make them come alive. The rules are to be phrased in the positive whenever possible. We need to condense (stories) down to the elements that are critical to starting over. What was the one thing youd tell others who are trying (or are forced) to start over? I know there are hundreds of people who read this blog who have had to start over, in one way or another. Part 1 of 3 Teachers Talk About Social Media in the Classroom and Personal Branding! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Im starting a three part series on how social media influences the classroom and can provide value to both the professor and student, in an educational setting. To do this, I found two teachers that get it and have used blogs for student collaboration and skill development. They also feel it is an innovative and cool way to teach. Carinne Weisgerber is an Assistant Professor of Communication at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas and Tammy Powley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Modern Languages at Indian River State College. This series will give you a deeper sense of how the next generation is being groomed! Why a blog for your students? Corinne: As a college professor who teaches mostly public relations classes, Ive become very interested in the way new social media technologies are reshaping the public relations industry. These technologies are reversing our old models of communicating with key stakeholders and are ringing in a new era of two-way communication characterized by conversation and dialogue. Tomorrowâs PR professionals need to understand both the tremendous opportunities and the potential challenges that these social media technologies present to individuals, corporations, government and nonprofit organizations. Thatâs why I decided to develop a class on Social Media for PR last year. As part of that class I require all of my students to start a blog and post to it twice a week. I also ask them to comment on other blogs at least twice a week to illustrate the importance of participation in the blogosphere. By starting their own blogs, students learn to engage an audience, invite conversation, and respond to criticism. They also learn about the more technical aspects of blogging such as the importance of tagging for search engine optimization, or linking to other blogs. From a pedagogical standpoint, blogs provide a great new learning tool. They allow students to acquire new media literacy skills and express themselves in ways that go beyond the traditional paper-based term papers weâve been asking them to write for decades. Iâm not advocating that we get rid off term papers, but I do believe that we need to teach students how to articulate arguments using other, newer forms of communication, such as blogs, videos, slideshows, podcasts, etc. These technologies allow students to develop their âpublic voiceâ and to learn how to manage their self-presentation in a public forum. Tammy: Since weblogging is a form of alternative discourse, I think blogs are a good method for showing students that academic writing doesnât always have to be via the five paragraph theme approach. Also, the technology is free, so it is available to anyone who wants to try it out. Finally, it offers a way for students to learn a few technical skills, which may help them in other areas of their lives (school, work, etc.). What are the advantages to having a blog for your class from both perspectives (students and teachers)? Corinne: Having a course blog helps us get noticed and break down the physical walls of our classroom. It has allowed us to invite people outside our classroom to take part in our discussions and serves as a great illustration of the connective power of blogs. As a result of our course blog, we have connected with the authors of both of our textbooks, collaborated with classes from around the world, attracted guest speakers, invited comments from professional and amateur bloggers, received input from PR professionals, video-conferenced with PR firms, and secured new internship offers. Most of the conversations the course blog initiated just wouldnât have happened only a few years ago. For a student to have the author of his textbook respond to his post about one of the chapters for instance, is something I never even considered a possibility. Yet the blogs allowed it to happen! Tammy: Weblogs provide a method for creating community among those in the class. Students can post their blog entries and then comment on each othersâ blogs, and teachers can also participate via comments. To be continued.. How Can You Approach an Employee Suffering from Mental Health in the Workplace Once youve spotted the signs that an employee may be suffering from a mental health issue in the workplace, its not always to confront them about it in case you risk of causing them further distress. But at the same time, you have a duty of care to your staff and to just ignore them would be just as detrimental to their health and wellbeing. So what do you do and how should you do it? Let the employee know that the they and the company support mental health in the workplace, and direct the employee to resources available to help them improve and manage their mental health. Depending on the company, there may be policies in place for the manager to direct the employee to human resources. In this case, the manager should follow the policies outlined by their company. Renae Shaw Best practice when it comes to approaching an employee who may be suffering from a mental health problem is to invite them somewhere private where they feel safe and relaxed. Set aside an hour and make it clear that you have time to talk so they donât feel rushed or like they are taking up your time. Going off-site for a coffee can help a situation feel less intense and more informal. During your chat, use open ended questions which donât require a âyesâ or ânoâ answer e.g. asking âHow are you feeling at the moment?â rather than âAre you okay?â. Itâs important to be a non-judgemental listener â" stay calm and collected and be empathetic with what you hear. The skills represent a balance between sensitivity for the employee, expectations for the work environment, and positive views of mental health care, and the encouragement of the employee. Itâs also important that managers feel comfortable in having a conversation about mental health. Mindâs training can help equip line managers with the right skills and tools to recognise mental problems and support them to feel comfortable in having conversations. Additionally, the following tips can help when starting a conversation about mental health: Choose an appropriate place somewhere private and quiet Encourage people to talk ask simple, open and non-judgmental questions Donât make assumptions donât try to guess Listen to people and respond flexibly adapt your support to suit the individual Be honest and clear address specific grounds for concern at an early stage Ensure confidentiality Encourage people to seek advice and support Seek advice and support yourself Reassure people people may not always be ready to talk straight away Emma Mamo, Head of Workplace Wellbeing at Mind. Managers should not force someone to disclose a mental health issue, or suggest they are ill, but should explore conversations in a way that is not intrusive or judgemental. If there are concerns about health or poor performance, managers should explore whether there is a health or disability issue including mental health before implementing any formal performance management steps. Give them some space to talk and thinkbut recognise that they may not want to talk to their manager about a topic that theyre coming to grips with themselves. If you have a good personal relationship with the employee in question, arrange a meeting as soon as possible to talk to them in private. The conversation should be approached in a positive and supportive way. Instead, it may be best to simply ensure that they know you are available at any time and make them aware of the alternative support thatâs on offer in the organisation. You dont want to diminish trust or harm your relationship by prying, or by going someplace that somebody doesnt want to go or isnt ready to go. If they want to tell you, they will tell you. But its really delicate, and for me, its just about asking how they are doing and spending time and actually listening. I think itâs part of the problem with the delivery of healthcare in the United States, in general. There isnt a holistic approach that takes mental health into consideration, which is absolutely critical. Not including mental health is a big miss for a lot of companies.
